Completed Water Restoration Success
Project Overview
The Punnagai Lake Project in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, is a collaborative CSR initiative by WakeOurLake and the Nansei Research Foundation. Initiated in 2017, the project successfully rejuvenated Punnagai Lake and its catchment area, restoring groundwater levels and ensuring sustainable water management for surrounding communities.
Context and Challenge
- Water scarcity: The region faced declining groundwater and reduced water availability for agriculture and communities.
- Lake condition: Punnagai Lake, with a capacity of 20–30 lakh liters, required desilting, widening, and bund strengthening.
- Catchment area: Spanning 300 acres, the lake’s inflow channels needed restoration to improve water flow.
Intervention Strategy
- Scientific guidance: Led by SRO Senior Soil Scientist Dr. P. Velmurugan and Nansei Research Foundation.
- Recharge pit construction: A deep rainwater recharge pit adjacent to the lake, surpassing expectations in replenishing groundwater.
- Community involvement: NSS students and local volunteers designed recharge pits, built check dams, and strengthened bunds with vetiver planting.
- Engineering solutions: Approximately ten check dams constructed to slow water flow and increase percolation.
Impact Achieved
- Groundwater recharge: Significant improvement in aquifers and water table levels.
- Lake rejuvenation: Enhanced water-holding capacity and improved inflow channels.
- Community participation: Farmers replicated recharge pits, fostering collective ownership of sustainable water management.
- Ecological benefits: Improved water flow, soil conservation, and climate resilience in the Kolli Hill Forest range.
Lessons Learned
- Scientific rigor ensures success: Technical guidance and hydrological design maximized impact.
- Community-led interventions: Active participation by farmers and students created long-term ownership.
- Scalable model: The success at Punnagai Lake demonstrates replicability across other vulnerable lakes.
Future Outlook
The completed project has proven the effectiveness of CSR-driven water restoration. Future funding and partnerships will enable:
- Expansion of recharge structures and check dams across the catchment.
- Advanced monitoring using GIS and hydrological tools.
- Strengthening of farmer-led water governance.
- Long-term sustainability through flood mitigation and master planning.
- Water security for rural communities.
- Climate resilience through ecological restoration.
- Sustainable development aligned with CSR and ESG goals.
Nansei Research Foundation and WakeOurLake are committed to delivering measurable outcomes in water restoration. The completed Punnagai Lake Project stands as a case study of success, inspiring future collaborations for sustainable water management across India.
