Paimpozhil and Karamanur Lakes CSR Project

Completed Water Restoration Success

Project Overview

The Paimpozhil and Karamanur Lakes Project in Thiruchengode, Tamil Nadu, is a CSR initiative by WakeOurLake and the Nansei Research Foundation. The project successfully restored two critical lakes that had suffered from silting, invasive species, and loss of green cover due to anthropogenic pressures.

Context and Challenge

  • Paimpozhil Lake: Once abundant with water, the lake’s ecosystem was degraded by silting, poor maintenance, and exploitation of surrounding green cover.
  • Karamanur Lake: Faced similar silting issues and infestation by invasive weeds (locally known as Seemai Karuvelam).
  • Ecological decline: Both lakes experienced reduced water capacity and ecosystem imbalance, affecting local communities and biodiversity.

Intervention Strategy

  • Desilting and restoration: Clearing and widening of Paimpozhil Lake to restore water-holding capacity.
  • Green cover revival: Planting of approximately 500 palm trees to strengthen bunds and restore ecological balance.
  • Weed removal: Efforts to eliminate invasive species from Karamanur Lake.
  • Government collaboration: Support sought from local authorities to ensure long-term sustainability.

Impact Achieved

  • Improved water storage: Enhanced capacity of Paimpozhil Lake through desilting and bund strengthening.
  • Ecological restoration: Palm tree planting has begun to restore green cover and stabilize soil.
  • Community awareness: Local participation has increased, fostering ownership of water conservation.
  • Revival efforts: Karamanur Lake is on the path to recovery, with invasive weed removal underway.

Lessons Learned

  • Ecological interventions matter: Palm tree planting and weed removal are vital for long-term sustainability.
  • Community collaboration: Local involvement ensures ownership and continuity of restoration efforts.
  • Scalable model: The success at Paimpozhil and Karamanur Lakes demonstrates replicability across other vulnerable lakes.

Future Outlook

The completed project has proven the effectiveness of CSR-driven ecological restoration. Future funding and partnerships will enable:

  • Expansion of desilting and restoration activities.
  • Large-scale removal of invasive species.
  • Strengthening of bunds and green cover with native vegetation.
  • Deployment of monitoring systems for long-term sustainability.
  • Water security for rural communities.
  • Ecological restoration through sustainable interventions.
  • CSR and ESG-aligned impact for long-term resilience.

Nansei Research Foundation and WakeOurLake are committed to delivering measurable outcomes in water restoration. The completed Paimpozhil and Karamanur Lakes Project stands as a case study of success, inspiring future collaborations for sustainable water management across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
