Andal Eri Watershed and Lake Rejuvenation

Project Overview

The Andal Eri Watershed and Lake Rejuvenation Project in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu, is a collaborative initiative by the Nansei Research Foundation and Seeratham Foundation. The project applies scientific hydrogeological principles to restore Andal Lake, enhance groundwater recharge, and support sustainable farming in Ambalapatti Panchayat.

Context and Challenge

  • Water scarcity: Farmers in Ambalapatti Panchayat face declining water availability due to evaporation and poor recharge.
  • Lake condition: Andal Lake’s current water-holding capacity is only 1.66 lakh cubic meters, insufficient for community needs.
  • Ecological imbalance: Lack of vegetation and biodiversity around the lake has reduced resilience against climate stress.

Intervention Strategy

  • Scientific analysis: Detailed topological and groundwater scenario mapping conducted during field visits.
  • Island design: Division of the lake into 8 plots, with 20 strategically placed islands (40–60 ft diameter).
  • Functional benefits of islands:
    • Wind barriers to reduce evaporation.
    • Tree plantations to foster biodiversity.
    • Cost efficiency by minimizing soil excavation.
  • Rejuvenation plan: Recommended investment of ₹2.26 Crore to increase water-holding capacity by 2.8 times, from 1.66 lakh cubic meters to 4.68 lakh cubic meters.

Impact Achieved (Projected)

  • Water security: Enhanced storage capacity ensures reliable water availability for farming and community use.
  • Groundwater recharge: Improved percolation strengthens aquifers and supports long-term sustainability.
  • Ecological restoration: Tree plantations on islands create habitats and restore biodiversity.
  • Cost-effective design: Optimized interventions reduce project expenses while maximizing impact.

Why Funding is Critical

This project demonstrates a scientifically validated model for watershed restoration. With additional funding:

  • Implementation of the rejuvenation plan to expand water capacity.
  • Deployment of advanced monitoring systems for groundwater and lake health.
  • Expansion of ecological zones through tree plantations.
  • Long-term resilience through flood mitigation and sustainable master planning.
  • Water security for farming communities.
  • Climate resilience through ecological restoration.
  • CSR and ESG-aligned impact for sustainable development.

Nansei Research Foundation and Seeratham Foundation are committed to delivering measurable outcomes in water restoration. Your support will ensure that Andal Lake becomes a model for scientifically driven watershed rejuvenation across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
