Thendral Lake CSR Project

Completed Water Restoration Success

Project Overview

The Thendral Lake Project in Namakkal, Tamil Nadu, is a flagship CSR initiative by WakeOurLake and the Nansei Research Foundation. Initiated in 2017, the project successfully revived a critical water body that had dried up after decades of groundwater depletion and ecological decline. Today, it stands as a proven model for sustainable water restoration and community-led resilience.

Context and Challenge

  • Groundwater depletion: Bore wells between 800–1000 feet had gone completely dry.
  • Ecological stress: Forests lost green cover, crop yields failed, and villages faced severe water scarcity.
  • Lake condition: Thendral Lake, once capable of storing over 2 crore liters, had no proper inlet channels and had dried up completely.

This crisis threatened the livelihoods of farming communities and the ecological balance of the Kolli Hills foothills.

Intervention Strategy

  • GIS and field survey: Scientific mapping identified the root causes of water scarcity.
  • Community collaboration: Permissions secured from the Forest Department and Collectorate; active involvement of NSS students and local villagers.
  • Engineering solution: Construction of a 1 km canal from adjacent hills to channel rainwater into the lake.

This blend of science, engineering, and community participation ensured rapid and sustainable results.

Impact Achieved

  • Lake revival: For the first time in 40 years, Thendral Lake was replenished after rains.
  • Groundwater recharge: Aquifers and surrounding ecosystems are improving at an accelerating rate.
  • Community resilience: Villages now benefit from improved water security, agricultural productivity, and ecological restoration.

The project has become a blueprint for rural water management in Tamil Nadu.

Lessons Learned

  • Scientific rigor matters: GIS-based analysis ensured targeted interventions.
  • Community engagement is key: Local participation built trust and accelerated implementation.
  • Scalable model: The success at Thendral Lake demonstrates replicability across other vulnerable lakes.

Future Outlook

The completed project has proven the effectiveness of CSR-driven water restoration. Future funding and partnerships will enable:

  • Replication across Tamil Nadu and beyond.
  • Deployment of advanced GIS and monitoring systems.
  • Strengthening of community-led water governance.
  • Long-term sustainability through master planning and flood mitigation.
  • Water security for rural communities.
  • Climate resilience through ecological restoration.
  • Sustainable development aligned with CSR and ESG goals.

Nansei Research Foundation and WakeOurLake are committed to delivering measurable impact in water restoration. The completed Thendral Lake Project stands as a case study of success, inspiring future collaborations for sustainable water management across India.
